How to Program a BMW Key Fob

Are you wondering how to program a BMW key fob? It’s actually quite easy and the process can be done right at home. There are two basic methods to program a BMW key fob. The first method is used if you currently have a working key but want to program additional keys. The second method is used if you do not already have a working BMW key fob. How to Programming Additional BMW Key Fobs 

Do you already have at least one working BMW key fob? If so, follow the steps below to program additional key fobs:

1. Step inside the cabin on the vehicle with both the working key and the BMW key fob you wish to program. Make sure all doors and windows are closed.
2. Put the working key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 (do not start the engine). The dash lights and accessories will pop on.
3. Turn the key back and remove.
4. Take the BMW key fob that has already been programmed and hold down the unlock button. Then press the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times before releasing it. The doors will then automatically lock and unlock.
5. Take the BMW key fob you wish to program and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times before releasing the unlock button. Once again the doors should lock and unlock. When this happens, you are all set! You have programmed your BMW key fob. 

How to Program a New Key from Scratch

What if you do not have a working BMW key fob? That’s ok! Simply follow these steps instead. 

1. Insert key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times.
2. Remove the key.
3. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times before releasing the unlock button.
4. If you have more than one BMW key fob that you would like to program, all you have to do is repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
5. The process is complete once you turn on the ignition.
