How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

A common question we are asked at our service department is, “What is coolant?” This essential vehicle fluid contains an additive that ensures that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and that it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The purpose of coolant is to regulate your engine during extreme temperatures. Wondering how to check coolant and when to change coolant? We cover this and more in the guide below.

How to Check Coolant in Manchester

You don’t have to open the radiator cap to check the coolant level. All you have to do is take a look at the markings on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, your vehicle has enough coolant to function properly on Lowell, MA roads. If the level falls below that line, remove the radiator cap and add more coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Check the bottle to see if the coolant is premixed before you add it to the reservoir. When doing this, we recommend inspecting the hoses connected to the radiator to see if there are any leaks or damage.

Note: If you need to add more coolant, make sure that the engine has cooled before you do so. Do not try to open the radiator cap if the engine is still hot.

When to Set Up a Service Appointment

Coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. If your coolant looks a bit sludgy when you are checking the level, set up a service appointment as soon as possible. This can be caused by an internal gasket leak. When this happens, the coolant will drain quickly, increasing the risk of an overheated engine.

When to Change Coolant

Coolant levels deplete over time, so we recommend checking the level every three to six months. If you prefer to leave this up to the professionals at our service center, we invite you to set up an appointment at your earliest convenience.
