Two of the most popular luxury automotive brands in Nashua and Lowell, MA hail from Germany. Compare BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz brands to see which of these automotive giants deserves your hard-earned money. Both of these vaunted manufacturers have loyal fan bases, high-tech engines based on racing technology, and outstanding electric vehicles that push the envelope of range and performance.

Keep reading to decide which is better, Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW, in this debate. We think BMW wins out on several fronts, including safety, reliability, and a presence in America.

BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz: History

Our first stop in the BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz comparison is in the history of both brands. BMW has been more diversified in its offerings since starting the vaunted Formula One racing league in 1950.

BMW began in 1917 in Munich, Germany. The brand also owns MINI and Rolls-Royce. BMW was one of the founding members of Formula One. Its racing arm really took off in the 1980s when the automaker went all-in designing engines for F1 cars, with Nelson Piquet winning the F1 championship in 1983 thanks in part to a BMW powerplant. BMW continues this engineering excellence thanks to Formula E racing with electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is just a singular brand. One of its subsidiaries tests and manufactures racing engines for Formula One cars, but it got a later start than BMW.

Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW: Models Out

Both German automakers have released dozens of models every year, and 2024 was no exception. Mercedes-Benz created 33 distinct model lines for 2024, while BMW had 24. These manufacturers led the way with more and more electrified vehicles, giving a boost of horsepower and torque.

Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW: American Presence

Part of the BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz reliability debate comes from the American presence of these German automakers. Buying a new vehicle from BMW supports American jobs at a major assembly plant in Greer, South Carolina.

This huge plant manufactures 1,500 vehicles off of the assembly line every day, including the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM SUVs. Americans love their SUVs, and this plant produces more BMW SUVs than any other BMW plant in the world.

BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz Reliability

Two more factors when comparing BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz reliability include safety ratings and resale value. BMW has some of the best resale values on the market for vehicles less than five years old. For the 2024 model year, BMW had five Top Safety Picks from IIHS, while Mercedes-Benz had three. So, BMW is the more reliable brand with generally safer vehicles.
