BMW Invests More in Lightweight Materials

If there's one thing you can say about BMW, it's that they're always pushing the envelope. Their drive toward leaner, faster, more fuel-efficient luxury cars is boundless. To enhance the aforementioned trifecta, the German automaker has been increasing their usage of carbon fiber, renowned among savvy drivers as a kind of fountain of speed. Its envious light weight reduces BMW cars' load, allowing it to perform with even more vigor and zero compromise to safety. And because carbon fiber makes the engine work less hard, it has the potential to significantly improve fuel economy.
BMW isn't just using carbon fiber in their vehicles, however. They now hold a 15.16-percent stake in one of the most lauded carbon fiber suppliers in the business, SGL Carbon SE. And, it's a good thing, too.
As many of you know, carbon fiber isn't the most reasonable materials to use in the auto industry. That's where BMW's investment in SGL Carbon SE comes in. BMW wants to bring the benefits of carbon fiber to all of its drivers. And, a strategic alliance with SGL Carbon SE represents just one step BMW is taking to ensure they achieve this goal. By investing in companies such as SGL Carbon SE, BMW will ultimately serve to lower the cost of producing carbon fiber and effectively the market price drivers pay for the finished vehicles.
This isn't BMW's first partnership with SGL Carbon SE, either. Together, the two players have created a brand-new, state-of-the-art carbon fiber manufacturing facility in Washington state.
